British Ambassador to Switzerland Visits ELA Basel

Children, staff and parents at ELA Basel – The Swiss British School welcomed the British Ambassador to Switzerland to the school on Thursday 14th June.

Jane Owen represents Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the UK Government in Switzerland and Liechtenstein and has been based in Berne since 2017.

The distinguished visitor was greeted with a musical welcome by 130 children and guests in the school courtyard in the beautiful old town setting of St. Alban-Vorstadt. She was greeted by the Executive Director Jason Taylor before taking a tour of the school with two of the students in Primary 7. Guests from the School Board, Novartis, Roche and Lonza and parent volunteers later attended a reception with the Ambassador who formally launched the school’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Information about the school: ELA Basel – The Swiss British School opened as an early-years childcare centre in 1993 and has since grown into Basel’s premier international primary school offering a well-rounded, caring and academically rigorous programme for children aged 3 months to 12 years. While teaching is conducted in English, the school has been awarded the Basel-Stadt Secondary Transition Agreement which recognises the high degree of German taught in the school and enables graduating students to transition to local secondary schools without having to take an entrance test.
